Causes of ear infections
Outer ear, or otitis externa infections affect around one in 10 people at some point in their lives.
They’re commonly caused by a bacterial infection but can also be due to irritation, fungal infections and allergies.
You’re more likely to develop an outer ear infection if you regularly get water in your ear, swimmers for example, or if the skin inside the ear is damaged through either scratching or picking.
It’s sometimes referred to as ‘swimmer’s ear’ or ‘tropical ear’ as water in the ear can make you scratch inside and the moisture provides the perfect breeding ground for bacteria to grow.
Other factors which make you more prone to an outer ear infection include being a woman!
It’s slightly more common in women than men and age can be a factor too – it’s more commonly diagnosed in people aged 45 to 75.
